To further enhance international students’ awareness of fire safety and improve their self and mutual rescue abilities in the event of emergencies, the School of International Education organized a fire safety drill at 3:00 p.m. on March 14 on the north side of the International Student Apartments. Deputy Director Zhang Fan and other staff of the Security Office, Yang Yang, Head of the Fire Section, Secretary Chu Wanqiang and Deputy Secretary Zhao Wei of the General Party Branch of the School of International Education, Teachers Xing Yanxia and Ding Xiaoting for international student management, as well as all international students, participated in this event.
At the beginning of the drill, the staff of the Security Office delivered a lively and practical lecture on fire safety for international students. Based on recent fire cases in other universities, they explained the dangers and preventive measures of fires and the escape and self-rescue methods in case of fires in detail and mainly introduced the types of fire extinguishers and the methods and cautions when using them.

“Remember four steps of ‘lift, pull, hold, and press’ when using a fire extinguisher,” under the guidance of the staff, international students took turns picking up fire extinguishers and experiencing the fire-extinguishing process.Andres , an international student from Ecuador, excitedly said, “This is my first time using a fire extinguisher. Although I am a bit nervous, it’s very practical!”

After that, the simulated fire escape was carried out. As the alarm sounded, international students, guided by the staff, covered their mouths and noses with damp towels, bent low, and followed the safety exit signs to evacuate swiftly and orderly to the safe area.

The entire escape process was tense but well-organized, with everyone responding quickly and working closely, thus achieving the desired objectives. After the drill, Chu Wanqiang delivered a summary speech, where he recognized the effect of this event and emphasized that fire safety is a critical issue that should never be overlooked. In addition, he also expressed the hope that international students could enhance their awareness of fire safety and master essential fire safety skills through this event, so as to jointly create a safe and harmonious campus environment.
This drill represents one of the key measures by the School of International Education to strengthen safety education and management for international students. The School of International Education has always been prioritizing the safety of international students and will continue to carry out various regular safety education events to keep improving their safety awareness and self-protection abilities and safeguard their smooth study and life in China.
